The lines are considered part of the batter's box. In order to be out of the box the batter would have to have one foot touching the ground completely outside the batter's box as in E. In A, B, C & D the batter could legally hit the pitch because he would be considered in the batter's box. If the batter hit the ball while in E, he would be called out for being out of the batter's box. Prior to the pitch, the batter must have both feet completely within the lines of the batter's box. He can touch the lines but no part of his foot can be outside the lines. Therefore, prior to the pitcher releasing the ball, the batter would be legal in C & D but illegal in A, B & E. The umpire should call time and require that the batter assume a proper & legal stance within the box. Of course, once the pitcher pitches, A, B, C & D all become legal. |
